Kingdom off to a brilliant start with thumping victory

Thailand blanked Australia 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-22) in their opening Pool A match at the Asian Women's Volleyball Championship at Korat Chatchai Hall in Nakhon Ratchasima Wednesday night.

Thailand, who are chasing their third Asian title, started the match with Chatchu-on Moksri, Sirima Manakij, Thatdao Nuekjang, Sasipaporn Janthawisut, Thanacha Sooksod, Wimonrat Thanapan and Supattra Pairoj.

Wimonrat, who is making her Asian Championship debut, impressed while Chatchu-On was also in fine form as the home team cruised to an easy win in the first set.

Coach Danai Sriwacharamaytakul made wholesale changes in the second set, sending in Pornpun Guedpard, Wipawee Srithong, Charasporn Bandasak, Pimpichaya Kokram, Ajcharaporn Kongyot and Piyanut Pannoy and Thailand again dominated against their Australian opponents.

The third set was a closer affair after the Aussies put up a better performance but the Thais still prevailed with a 25-22 victory.

Thailand will play Mongolia on Friday at 6pm.

Japan started their campaign with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-22) victory over Iran in Pool B.

In Pool C, Vietnam stunned South Korea 3-2 (22-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-17, 15-13) while Taiwan beat Uzbekistan 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-18).

In Pool D, 13-time champions China eased past Hong Kong 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-6) and Kazakhstan edged Philippines 3-2 (25-21, 17-25, 24-26, 27-25, 15-6).

The top two teams from each pool will advance to the second round.
