Thais exit Changzhou meet early

Thai players had a disappointing day as they all bowed out in the first round at the US$2 million China Open in Changzhou on Wednesday.

Women's singles hope Supanida Katethong won the first set against Saena Kawakami but eventually lost to the Japanese 21-12, 20-22, 20-22 in just under an hour.

Earlier, Aimsaard sisters -- Benyapa and Nuntakarn -- lost to Jeong Na-Eun and Kim Hye-Jeong of South Korea 13-21, 26-24, 15-21 in the women's doubles opener of the World Tour Super 1000 event.

Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai also exited the tournament early after they lost to Apriyani Rahayu and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti of Indonesia 21-17, 12-21, 19-21.

Supak Jomkoh and Supissara Paewsampran also bowed out, losing to Hiroki Midorikawa and Natsu Saito of Japan 19-21, 18-21 in the mixed doubles.

Men's singles hope Kantaphon Wangcharoen was beaten by Rasmus Gemke of Denmark 18-21, 21-18, 15-21.

Sixth seed Li Shifeng of China downed Chou Tien-chen of Taiwan 21-14, 18-21, 21-18; Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong eliminated Zhao Junpeng of China 21-19, 21-23, 21-19; and Kanta Tsuneyama of Japan claimed the day's biggest upset after beating second seed Anthony Ginting of Indonesia 21-11, 18-21, 21-17.

In other results in the women's singles, second seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan eased into the second round after beating Putri Kusuma Wardiani of Indonesia 21-12, 21-18 while third seed Chen Yufei of China beat Zhang Beiwen of the US 21-18, 21-5.
