Kunlavut sets up last-16 clash with Nishimoto in China

Fourth seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn booked his berth in the last 16 of the US$1 million BWF China Masters in Shenzhen yesterday.

The reigning world champion defeated Srikanth Kidambi of India 21-15, 14-21, 21-13 in the first round at Shenzhen Bay Gymnasium.

He will play Kenta Nishimoto of Japan today for a place in the quarter-finals of the World Tour Super 750 event.

Nishimoto defeated another Indian player Priyanshu Rajawat 21-17, 21-14.

Mixed doubles fifth seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Saspiree Taerattanachai were to face Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Lohau of Germany later yesterday.

Women's doubles pairs Benyapa and Nuntakarn Aimsaard and Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai were also set to play later yesterday.

Other Thai players failed to make it past the first round yesterday.

Men's singles star Kantaphon Wangcharoen lost to Lu Guangzu of China 20-22, 16-21.

Busanan Ongbamrungphan went down to seventh seed Gregoria Tunjung of Indonesia 16-21, 10-21 in the women's singles opener.

And mixed doubles pair Supak Jomkoh and Kittinupong Kedren bowed out after losing to second seeds Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang of China 16-21, 16-21.

In the day's biggest upset, Nguyen Thuy Linh of Vietnam stunned Spain's fifth seed Carolina Marin 10-21, 21-19, 21-15 in the women's singles.

In other results in the women's singles, third seed Chen Yufei of China eased past compatriot Gao Fengjie 21-14, 21-13, and sixth seed He Bingjiao of China defeated Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland 21-18, 21-13. In the men's singles, second seed Anthony Ginting of Indonesia beat Loh Kean Yew of Singapore 21-15, 21-19.
