Badminton star Kunlavut Vitidsarn and taekwondo fighter Panipak Wongpattanakit were named the best male and female amateur athletes of 2023 respectively by the Sports Authority of Thailand on Saturday.

Motorcycle racer Somkiat Chantra won the best men's professional award while LPGA golfer Atthaya Thitikul took the women's title.

They were honoured at a ceremony presided over by Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol.

Kunlavut made history by becoming the first Thai to win the men's singles world title this year while Panipak won her second successive Asian Games gold medal in Hangzhou in September.

Somkiat, 24, won his second Moto2 title at the Japanese Grand Prix and finished third at the Thailand Grand Prix this year.

The 24-year-old Idemitsu Honda Team Asia rider became the first Thai to finish sixth in the world championship standings.

Weightlifter Weerapol Chuma received the best male youth athlete award while the female award went to junior world badminton champion Pitchamon Opatniputh.

The best male Muay Thai fighter award went to Nattawut Simma (Petjakkajan Chor Hapayak) while Janjira Parunai (Karakate Por Muangphet) took the female award.

Wheelchair racer Pongsakorn Paeyo and wheelchair fencer Saysunee Jana won the best male and female disabled athletes respectively.

The best team (sport) award went to the women's volleyball team, who won their third Asian Championship crown and an Asian Games bronze medal.

The best team (event) were mixed doubles shuttlers Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai.
