Ireland's Ewart triumphs in thrilling finish

Jesse Ewart of Terengganu Cycling team won the fourth stage of the 2024 Tour of Thailand while Roojai Insurance's Adne Van Engelen claimed the overall leader's yellow jersey yesterday.

The 155.90km stage yesterday began in Phitsanulok and finished at Phetchabun.

Irishman Ewart braved the scorching heat to edge Thanakhan Chaiyasombat of Thailand Continental Cycling team in a thrilling finish to win the stage with a time of 3:38.26 hours. Dutch rider Egelen took the third place.

Van Engelen, however, surged to the top in the individual overall standings with a total time of 14:29.13 hours to claim the yellow jersey. Thanakhan is just 0.09 second behind in 14:29.22 hours.

Peerapol Chawchiangkwang, who was the overall leader after the third stage, slipped to third place in 14:29.30 hours. Peerapol, of Thailand Continental Cycling team, finished yesterday's stage in 40th place.

Thanakhan was also the stage's best Asean rider, receiving the purple jersey.

China Glory -- Mentech Continental Cycling team won the stage classification yesterday with a time of 10:55.21, followed by Roojai Insurance and Terengganu Cycling team in second and third places respectively.

The top three positions in the overall team standings remained unchanged, with Roojai Insurance maintaining the lead with a total time of 43:29.49 hours, followed by the Thailand Continental Cycling team in second place and the St George Continental Cycling team in third place.

Stage winners China Glory -- Mentech Continental Cycling team were fifth overall.

Today's fifth stage starts from the shrine of King Naresuan the Great in Phitsanulok and finish in Phichit with a total distance of 159km.

The six-stage tournament ends tomorrow.
