Chen, Wang set up all-Chinese title showdown

Chen Yufei will face Chinese compatriot Wang Zhiyi in the women's singles final of the Badminton Asia Championships in Ningbo, China, today.

Chen defeated Han Yue 21-15, 21-16 and Wang overcame He Bingjiao 21-19, 21-17 in an all-Chinese cast for the semi-finals yesterday.

Olympic champion Chen is attempting to win her first Asian title after winning silver in 2018 and bronze in 2019 and 2023 while Wang is chasing her second continental crown after her maiden victory in 2022.

Indonesian star Jonatan Christie secured his place in the men's singles decider after knocking out top seed Shi Yuqi of China 18-21, 21-19, 21-12.

Li Shifeng of China and Kodai Naraoka of Japan were to meet in the second semi-final later yesterday.

In the women's doubles semis, Zhang Shuxian and Zheng Yu beat fellow Chinese Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan 21-14, 21-16.

They will play either compatriots Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning or Korean duo Baek Ha-Na and Lee So-Hee in today's title match.

In the men's doubles event, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin beat Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik 21-14, 21-18 in an all-Malaysian semi-final.

They will play the winners of the second semi-final between Lee Jhe-huei and Yang Po-hsuan of Taiwan and Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang of China.

Thai mixed doubles stars Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai bowed out in the quarter-finals on Friday after losing to Seo Sung-Jae and Chae Yu-Jun of South Korea 21-17, 11-21, 13-21.

It was the Thai pair's fourth straight loss against the Koreans.

Their exit followed Kunlavut Vitidsarn's loss earler in the day.

Seo and Chae were to play Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong of China in the mixed doubles last four.
