Thais falter, icy Busanan stands alone

Busanan Ongbamrungphan moved into the women's singles quarter-finals of the US$420,000 BWF Malaysia Masters 2024 in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

The Thai star defeated Goh Jin Wei of Malaysia 21-10, 21-14 and will play Putri Kusuma Wardani of Indonesia in the last eight of the World Tour Super 500 event at Axiata Arena.

Busanan, 28, is the only Thai player left in the tournament after Ratchanok Intanon, Pornpawee Chochuwong, Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul and doubles players all bowed out yesterday.

Wardani stunned Ratchanok 21-19, 21-19 as the Thai fourth seed exited the tournament in the last-16 stage for the second successive week.

Eighth seed Pornpawee lost to Gao Fangjie of China 19-21, 20-22 while men's singles hope Panitchaphon fell to top seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark 18-21, 13-21.

Men's doubles duo Peeratchai Sukphun and Pakkapon Teeraratsakul lost to fifth seeds Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin of Malaysia 17-21, 12-21 and women's doubles pair Laksika Kanlaha and Phataimas Muenwong were beaten by sixth seeds Lee Yu-Lim and Shin Seung-Chan of South Korea 17-21, 14-21.

Meanwhile women's top seed Han Yue, second seed Wang Zhiyi, fifth seed Pusarla V Sindhu and sixth seed Zhang Yiman all moved safely through to the quarters.

Han, a finalist the Thailand Open won by Supanida Katethong on Sunday, defeated Hung Yi-ting of Taiwan 21-16, 21-11, Wang defeated Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo of Indonesia 21-10, 21-11; Sindhu battled past Sim Yu-Jin of South Korea 21-13, 12-21, 21-14 and Zhang defeated Liang Ting-yu of Taiwan 21-15, 21-16.

On the men's side, second seed Anders Antonsen defeated fellow Dane Magnus Johannesen 21-12, 21-10; third seed Li Shifeng of China defeated Leong Jun Hao of Malaysia 21-15, 21-16; fifth seed Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia ousted Kiran George of India 21-13, 21-18 and seventh seed Chou Tien-chen of Taiwan defeated Koo Takahashi of Japan 21-14, 21-5.
