Busanan Ongbamrungphan booked her berth in the women’s singles semi-finals of the US$420,000 BWF Malaysia Masters 2024 in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

The Thai star overcame Putri Kusuma Wardani of Indonesia 21-12, 21-23, 21-16 in the last eight of the World Tour Super 500 event at Axiata Arena.

Busanan will play fifth seed Pusarla V Sindhu in the semi-finals today.

The Indian star knocked out top seed Han Yue of China 21-13, 14-21, 21-12 in another thriller.

The other semi-final is an all-Chinese clash between second seed Wang Zhiyi and sixth seed Zhang Yiman.

Wang downed fellow Chinese Gao Fangjie 23-21, 21-17 while Zhang denied Ashmita Chaliha of India 21-10, 21-15 in yesterday’s quarter-finals.

In the men’s singles semi-finals, Lee Zii Jia and Angus Ng Ka Long will meet in a rematch of last Sunday’s Thailand Open final.

Malaysian fifth seed Lee stayed on course for back-to-back titles after eliminating second seed Anders Antonsen of Denmark 21-15, 19-21, 21-11.

Hong Kong’s Ng Ka Long, a runner-up at the Bangkok tournament, upset third seed Li Shifeng of China 21-13, 21-15 to reach the last four.

In the top half of the draw, China’s Lu Guangzu ousted Hong Kong’s Jason Gunawan 21-17, 15-21, 21-14 to progress. Lu will play the winner of the last quarter-final between top seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark and seventh seed Chou Tien-chen of Taiwan.

Mixed doubles top seeds Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei advanced after beating Malaysian compatriots Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing 21-19, 21-14 while Rinov Rivaldi and Pitha Haningtyas Mentari defeated Dejan Ferdinansyah and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja 21-9, 18-21, 21-8 in an all-Indonesian quarter-final.
