Busanan's brilliant run in KL ends with fighting last-4 loss to Sindhu

Busanan Ongbamrungphan bowed out in the semi-finals of the US$420,000 BWF Malaysia Masters 2024 in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.

The 28-year-old Thai went down to fifth seed Pusarla V Sindhu 21-13, 16-21, 12-21 in the last four of the World Tour Super 500 event at Axiata Arena.

Former world champion Sindhu, who played her first semi-final in seven months, will face Wang Zhiyi in the final after the Chinese second seed eased past sixth seeded compatriot Zhang Yiman 21-9, 21-11.

Wang was a semi-finalist at the Thailand Open last Sunday, losing to eventual champion Supanida Katethong in the Bangkok tournament.

The women's doubles decider will pit sixth seeds Lee Yu-Lim and Shin Seung-Chan against top seeds Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi.

Lee and Shin of South Korea defeated second seeds Pearly Tan and Muralitharan Thinaah of Malaysia 21-16, 21-10 while Japan's Iwanaga and Nakanishi downed fourth seeds Stefani Stoeva and Gabriela Stoeva of Bulgaria 21-14, 21-16.

In the mixed doubles semi-finals, fourth seeds Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Jemie Lai of Malaysia upset top seeded compatriots Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei 21-11, 21-19 and third seeds Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Haningtyas Mentari of Indonesia edged second seeds Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje of Denmark 26-24, 14-21, 21-18.

In the men's singles event, top seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark was to face China's Lu Guangzu while Malaysian fifth seed Lee Zii Jia, the Thailand Open winner, was to play Hong Kong's Angus Ng Ka Long in a rematch of last Sunday's final later on Saturday.
