Puripol bags silver, makes Thai history

Puripol Boonson made history by becoming the first Thai sprinter to win a medal at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru, yesterday morning Thai time.

The 18-year-old came into the 100m final knowing he would need an explosive start to challenge for the top of the podium.

Puripol was not able to get out quickly enough to win the title, but finished well to claim a silver medal with a time of 10.22sec at the Estadio Atletico de la Videna.

South Africa's Bayanda Walaza won the gold medal with a time of 10.19sec.

Bradley Nkoana, also from South Africa, clocked 10.26sec to take the bronze medal.

It was the second time that Puripol, a silver medallist at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year, qualified for the 100m race at the World Athletics U20 Championships.

He missed out on a podium finish at the 2022 championships, finishing in fourth place.

Puripol reached the 100m semi-finals at the Paris Olympic Games earlier this month before finishing 21st overall.

He was the youngest runner in the field in Paris.
