Olympics to deliver major boost to equipment market

The 2016 Olympics Games in Rio de Janeiro will deliver a major boost for the golf equipment market, according to Thomas Kroll, a spokesman for TaylorMade-adidas golf.

Golf will be part of the Olympic Games for the first time in Rio de Janeiro, and its inclusion has been welcomed by the industry.

"Everyone in golf is looking forward to the Olympic Games which is the world's biggest competition," Kroll said during TaylorMade's product launch at Summit Windmill Golf Club last week.

With more countries taking part in the Olympics than any other golf tournament, the Games will bring the sport to an entirely new audience.

"The golf industry has room to grow, especially in China and India," Kroll said. "I hope the Olympic Games will not only bring a big boost for the game but also help it find a new market."

As for TaylorMade-adidas, Kroll said last year here brought major success, with revenue of about US$1.7 billion, exceeding their target of $1.3 billion.

"Last year, the revenue was beyond our expectation but we do not rest on that success," he said.
