Kirins hail returning Desaeyere

Belgian manager succeeds short-lived Schaefer

Rene Desaeyere has been reappointed to coach SCG Muang Thong United, succeeding Winfried Schaefer, the club said on Friday.

Singha All-Stars’ Teerathep Winothai, front, in action against Manchester United.

The Belgian is a surprise choice as he was sacked by Muang Thong in 2010 after guiding the Kirins to the Thai Premier League title.

Desaeyere, 65, joins the defending champions from BEC Tero Sasana, who have been struggling in the league.

Former Thailand boss Schaefer is now Jamaica coach after quitting Muang Thong on Thursday after just one month.

Muang Thong director Ronnarit Suewaja said on Friday the Kirins always wanted to bring back Desaeyere.

"There were some problems that prevented us from bringing him back in the past," Ronnarit said.

"When he was our coach, he made us play entertaining football. I believe he will be able to help us retain the title."

Desaeyere has worked with many clubs in Asia, Europe and Thailand. He helped Muang Thong win the TPL crown in 2010 and also reach the semi-finals of both the Thai FA Cup and the AFC Cup.

Meanwhile, the TPL resumes today after a two-week break with Bangkok Glass against leaders Buriram United the clash of the round.

Glass coach Atthapol Bussapakom will face his former club for the first time after he was sacked by Buriram a few months ago.

Glass striker Teerathep Winothai has vowed to silence his critics by scoring against the league leaders.

The forward, who has not yet scored in the league this season, was booed throughout a friendly between a local All-Star side and Manchester United last Saturday.

He said before the match that he would not celebrate if he scored against his 'old club'. After he hit the winner against United in a 1-0 win, he was ridiculed by his critics.

"I can't remember when he played for Man U," said a fan.
