World champion Ronnie O'Sullivan discusses his rollercoaster career and issues facing the sport

The popularity of snooker has been in a decline partly because of slow play and lack of action. What are your ideas about how to make the sport more interesting and more exciting?

They should bring back power snooker and give snooker players a time limit on how long they can take a shot in normal games. The audience can only watch so much of slow play.

Recently a frame of snooker took nearly an hour to play with so much safety and in that time I won a match!

We also need more invitational matches where the top 16 or even top 32 are invited more to take part in competitions around the world.

The people who love snooker only want to see the best snooker and the top 32 are there for a reason _ they are the best in the sport at the moment.

I love a good show of snooker and I admire the safety players but when it slows the game and it can be frustrating for the public and audience.

We should also get more young people involved in the sport. I will start my own academies and foundation soon to help the youngsters. Snooker is a great game _ it just needs more showmanship, like wrestling.

Six-red snooker is popular in some parts of the world. What do you think about it?The Sangsom 6-red World Championship [in Bangkok] has been a good success.

A lot of my colleagues enjoyed it. It would have been nice for me to play in the tournament.

Maybe I can play the PCT [Players Tour Championship] finals in Bangkok in March.

I will discuss it with my manager to decide if I play or not. I am sure 6-red snooker will grow as I know it's popular.

You recently said on Twitter that willpower only gets you so far. What did you mean by that?

Sometimes you need luck, commitment, practice, a happy personal life _ it just goes on and lots of factors are involved.

Stephen Lee has been banned for 12 years. What are your thoughts on his punishment? Will it change the game?

It's a shame he has been banned but World Snooker obviously found him guilty and he has had his punishment. It sent a clear message to all cheats in any sport that if you are caught you will be dealt with so hopefully a lot of young people and new people to any sport will realise that cheating is terrible and won't do it. It's a shame anyone has to resort to cheating.

I have only ever wanted to compete on a fair and honest basis and would not want my love of snooker ruined by anyone.

You have said that you feel strongly about match-fixing, and anything that could damage the integrity of the sport. Do you feel morale is still strong within the sport?

Morale is still strong in the sport as a lot of the players are aware that the real problem was many years ago and now it has calmed down and hopefully the problem is gone.

You recently commended World Snooker for its work to maintain the sport's integrity. Which area of the sport do you think has seen the biggest improvement?

The policing of snooker to ensure illegal betting and match fixing is not happening.

Can you explain why you think former WPBSA chairman Barry Hearn did a good job cleaning up the game as you see it?

Barry is a great guy and he wants a clean sport and has brought in rules and the WPBSA [World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association] is good in policing matters.

Why do you seem to be uncertain, at times, about whether you want to continue playing snooker or not?

I am not sure if you have 100 pages free in your paper for me to explain that. There are a lot of things that go on in my life and I just need to be able to deal with it one day at a time or one tournament at a time.

You have built up a bit of a reputation as a great, but controversial, player. Do you feel that people generally misunderstand you, or the things you say?

People want a villain, a hero, a scapegoat. I don't mean to be controversial, I just express my feelings _ and that's me. I am also a private person and sometimes rightly or wrongly let my thoughts out in public or my actions.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Yes. I feel I am in a happier place right now personally. I am playing more snooker. I have a new manager and I feel OK at the moment. I would like to say to all the people who read this interview that I am a genuine guy and I love snooker and it would be nice if I play in the PTC finals in March as I think Thailand is a beautiful country and am sure would enjoy Bangkok.
