Historic gold in karate-do

The Thai karate-do team claimed two gold medals yesterday and enjoyed a huge payday.

Thai athletes celebrate their historic win in karate-do.

Theerapat Kangtong led the men's kumite team to upset defending champions Malaysia 3-1 in the final and also secured the individual title with his win in the 84kg division.

It was Thailand's first ever SEA Games gold medal in the men's team event since the Thailand Karate Federation was established 28 years ago.

The men's individual title was also Thailand's first since 2005.

The TKF had targeted only one gold medal in Myanmar and its president Chutinant Bhirombhakdi has promised a bonus of one million baht for each gold medal they won.

Each SEA Games champion will also receive 200,000 baht from the National Sports Development Fund.

Thailand head coach Tareq Abdesselem said that Thailand were underdogs against Malaysia.

"Our players are quite young and relatively inexperienced," he said. "We are successful because we have confidence in ourselves."

Coach Dunyarat Rattanaphun said: "We are so happy that we won a historic gold medal. These players are still young and all have a bright future."
