China shuttles to Indonesia Open semis

Shuttling powerhouse China dominated the Indonesia Open quarterfinals Friday, with four doubles teams and three singles pushing through to the semis.

Li Xuerui of China hits a return against Saina Nehwal of India at the 2014 Indonesia Open women singles quarter final badminton match in Jakarta on June 20, 2014

But in the men's rounds, all eyes were on top-seed Lee Chong Wei from Malaysia, who beat Denmark's Hans-Kristian Vittinghus with a safe 21-18, 21-11 in the men's singles, winning an impressive 11 consecutive points against the Dane.

Vittinghus struggled to keep up with Lee, with shots placed a hair's breadth from the sidelines.

"The opener was a bit tough. But I just tried my best to win. I have now won five times," Lee told reporters after the match.

"It's been smooth so far. I'll go back and prepare for the Commonwealth Games, and then the World Championships and Asian Games," he said.

Women's top seed Li Xuerui of China beat India's Saina Nehwal in a tight first game but proved the faster and more dexterous in the second, ending the game at 22-20, 21-15.

Women's second seed and former world number one Wang Shixian of China beat Thailand's Busanan Ongbumrungpan 21-19, 21-19.

South Korea's Jang Ye-Na and Kim So-young made a nail-biting comeback against Denmark's Christinna Pedersen and Kamilla Rytter Juhl in the women's doubles, losing the first game but bagging the second and third in close-shave tie-breakers.

Despite their early dominance, the Danes lost when Rytter smashed the shuttle wide at match point, ending 14-21, 22-20, 22-20.

"This is a big win for us because Denmark is very difficult to beat," Jang told reporters.

"If we play our best, I think we can win this," she said.

China will be well represented in the doubles semis, with men's pair Fu Haifeng and Zhang Nan, and Tian Qing and Zhao Yunlei for the women all winning against fellow Chinese pairs.

Chinese women's team Ma Jin and Tang Yuanting cruised to the semis after defeating Singapore's Shinta Mulia Sari and Yao Lei, 21-18, 17-21, 22-20.

Shinta and Yao crept close to victory in the third game when they jumped to match point at 18-20. But the Chinese pair won four consecutive points to seal their victory.

Indonesian men's pair Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan eased past their fellow countrymen Markus Fernaldi Gideon and Markis Kido 21-13, 21-23, 21-13 to a wild home crowd.
