Pornanong retains LPGA Masters title

World No.31 Pornanong Phatlum retained the Thailand LPGA Masters title at Panya Indra Golf club yesterday.

Sharing the lead after two rounds at the three-million-baht tournament, Pornanong shot a three-under-par 69 in the final round to win on 207.

Four strokes behind in joint second were Rungthiwa Pangjan (71) and overnight co-leader Nontaya Srisawang (73).

Pornanong took home 520,000 baht while Rungthiwa and Nontaya each earned 246,826 baht.

Pavarisa Yoktuan closed with a 67 to finish fourth on 211 while Kusama Meechai (71), amateur Pimnipa Panthong (73) and Dolapa Phudthipinij (76) shared fifth place on 215.

Jaruporn Palakawaong Na Ayutthaya (70) and amateur Virunpat Olankitkunchai (71) were tied for eighth on 216.

The 25-year-old Pornanong got off to a fast start in the final round with three straight birdies from the first hole and never looked back.

The Chaiyaphum native said she was happy to see several young players play well.

"Such a tournament is good for golf development and for young players to hone their skills,'' she said.

Pornanong will next play at the US$3.25 million Evian Masters in France, the final major of the year, from Sept 11-14.
