Thailand plans to revive its ambition to host a Formula One race with Pattaya slated to be the venue.
Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said yesterday Thailand had potential to host a Grand Prix which could be held in Pattaya.
The renowned resort town has infrastructure and facilities to host such a world-class event and it is not far from Suvarnabhumi and U-tapao airports.
According to Kobkarn, Thailand wants to rebrand Pattaya from a nightlife spot to a world-class sporting destination.
"The final decision rests with the government,'' Kobkarn said.
The idea to host a Formula One race in Thailand was raised a few years ago when Mark Webber, who then competed for Red Bull Racing, staged a drive show in Bangkok and Thailand hosted a Race of Champions.
However, the plan was shelved due to political problems.
