Pavarisa pulls away from Sherman to claim title

Pavarisa Yoktuan fired a three-under-par 69 in the final round yesterday to win the season-opening Singha-SAT Thai LPGA Championship at Panya Indra Golf Club.

The 20-year-old, who shared the lead in the first two rounds, made five birdies and two bogeys in the third round and won by four shots on 209.

Co-overnight leader Sherman Santiwiwatthanaphong was runner-up after hitting a 73 for 213.

Pavarisa received 120,000 baht in prize money while Sherman got 62,000 baht.

"I was lucky to win the title because I did not hit the ball well today," said Pavarisa, who has won three times at the course.

Amateur Benyapa Niphatsonpon, 17, came in third on 214 after a 69.

Chirapat Javojavanil (72) finished fourth on 215 while amateurs Pannarat Thanapolbonyaras (67), Suthavee Chanachai (67) and Parinda Phokan (75) were tied for fifth place on 216.

Amateur Budsabakorn Sukhapan, who won gold in the team event and silver in the individual competition at last year's Asian Games, were joint 10th.

The second event of the Thai LPGA Tour season will be at Rancho Charnvee Resort and Country Club in Nakhon Ratchasima from Feb 18-20.

In Taiwan, world No.27 Pornanong Phatlum fired a one-under-par 71 yesterday to share the first-round lead at the Hitachi Ladies Classic.

Pornanong, who has won the event three times, was tied with Taiwan's Lin Tzu-Chi.
