Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud service arm under tech giant Amazon, has announced plans to roll out its Asia-Pacific infrastructure in Bangkok while vowing to invest more than US$5 billion (190 billion baht) in Thailand over the next 15 years.
According to AWS, its new Asia-Pacific region in Bangkok will consist of three availability zones, adding to the 87 existing zones across 27 geographic regions.
The new region will enable customers with data residency preferences or requirements to securely store data in Thailand, while providing even lower latency across the country, AWS said in a statement.
The firm said the new region will enable developers, enterprises, governments, educators and non-profit organisations to run their applications and serve end users from AWS data centres located in Thailand, thereby ensuring customers who want to keep their data in the country can do so.
"The new region will enable organisations to build with AWS technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning, data analytics and Internet of Things," said Prasad Kalyanaraman, vice-president of infrastructure services at AWS.
"With these new tools, AWS is empowering governments to better engage with citizens, enterprises to innovate for their next phase of growth, and entrepreneurs to build businesses and compete on a global scale."
The availability zones place infrastructure in separate and distinct geographic locations, with enough distance to significantly reduce the risk of a single event impacting customers' business continuity, yet near enough to provide low latency for high-availability applications in use over multiple zones, said AWS.
Each availability zone has independent power, cooling and physical security, as well as connection through redundant, ultra-low latency networks, said the firm.
In 2020, AWS launched AWS Outposts in Thailand. AWS outposts is a family of fully managed solutions delivering AWS infrastructure and services to virtually any on-premises or edge location for a truly consistent hybrid experience.
It has also rolled out 10 Amazon CloudFront edge locations in Bangkok since 2020. Amazon CloudFront is a highly secure and programmable content delivery network that accelerates the delivery of data, videos, applications, and application program interfaces to users worldwide with low latency and high transfer speeds.
The cloud titan said it also plans to deepen its investment in Thailand with the launch of an upcoming AWS local zone in Bangkok.
AWS local zones are a type of AWS infrastructure deployment that places compute, storage, database and other select services closer to a large population, industry, and IT centres, enabling customers to deliver applications that require single-digit millisecond latency to end users.
AWS said it is committed to investing in upskilling local developers, students and IT leaders through its learning programmes in the face of the increasing cloud adoption across Thailand.
