SURAT THANI - A large number of objects modified for use as weapons have been recovered by officials who combed the Region 8 Juvenile Vocational Training Centre in Muang district where a riot broke out yesterday, leaving 85 injured and one dead.

About 200 officials -- including soldiers, police and administration -- led by Pol Col Sonthichai Awatanakulthep, deputy provincial governor, went inside the youth remand centre on Wednesday morning.

Officials searched the sleeping quarters and divers scoured a large pond inside the centre. They recovered a large number of objects made from wooden sticks, sheets of steel, stones and sharp materials. No illegal items were found in the search.

Wongsak Prathiap-in, director of the centre, said there are about 400 youths in the facility.

Yesterday's brawl between rival groups from Surat Thani on one side and Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phangnga and Krabi on the other left one dead and 85 injured, he said.

Of the injured, 17 had been kept at Surat Thani Hospital for treatment, while others who sustained minor injuries had returned to the centre.

Nobody escaped during the riot, he said.

The officials will remain at the centre until the situation returns to normal, said Mr Wongsak.
