Monkeys tear up voter lists in Phichit

PHICHIT -- About 100 pig-tailed macaques raided the open hall of Wat Hat Mun Krabue temple in Muang district of this northern province, which is designated as a voting unit for the Aug 7 charter referendum, and tore up lists of voters lists on Sunday morning, Matichon Online reported.

Pol Lt Col Banchob Uthayo, an investigator of tambon Yanyao police station, and Chatchawal Suksawat, chief of Moo 1 village, went to the temple after being informed of the raid.

They found that of the 15 pages of the voters, five had been torn up. Also torn up were seven pages of a 10-page notice containing details on how to vote, which was also put up on a notice board.

Villagers who witnessed the incident said the raid occurred late on Sunday morning. They chased and tried to catch the monkeys but to no avail.

The moneys dispersed, leaving behind the torn papers.

They said the monkeys which were responsible for the damage live in the bushes around the temple.

Pol Lt Col Banchob said he had reported the incident to his superiors and to the provincial election committee.
