RAYONG -- A fire broke out in a building used to store industrial waste in Muang district early on Thursday, causing extensive damage but no casualties.

The fire started about 4.40am at the General Environmental Conservation Plc (Genco) building on Muang Mai Map Ta Phut Road in tambon Huay Pong.

The flames spread rapidly, destroying the building's canvas roof and much of the main structure. The building contained industrial waste which was due to be sent for disposal at a factory in Samae Dam area of Bangkok's Bang Khun Thian district.

Firefighters from the Map Ta Phut Municipality were able to bring the blaze under control by 5.50am.

The cause of the fire was being investigated. The building was closed for the night and only security guards were there. None were injured.

GENCO said it appeared the fire began in about 2 cubic metres of degenerated glue awaiting disposal.

The company said it had since blocked the drains to prevent water contaminated while dousing the flames  from running into public waterways. The air quality had been measured and found to be at normal levels.

The Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate office said it would ask GENCO to explain the cause of the fire and measures to be taken to prevent a recurrence.
