Two rescued after boat capsizes in Chao Phraya River

Two men were pulled from Chao Praya River after their small tugboat capsized in front of Wat Rakang Kositaram in Bangkok’s Rattanakosin area on Friday.

The boat was towing sand barges, travelling north from Phra Padang in Samut Prakan to Ayutthaya’s Nakhon Luang district.

Around 11.50am it encountered choppy waves generated by the wake two other boats, one on each side. Driver Thawee Pundee said the boat quickly sank as he and the passenger jumped into the river. They were rescued.

The sand barges were unaffected. Another boat took up the tow to deliver the cargo to its destination.

Mr Thawee said he had only recently bought the boat, paying 600,000 baht for it, and was still paying off the loan. He would have to hire a crane to raise the sunken boat.

The Marine Police and the Marine Department will investigate the cause of accident.
