Pickups collide, 3 killed, 14 injured

SURIN - Three people were killed and 14 others injured when two pickup trucks collided in the middle of an intersection in southern Sangkha district on Monday, police said.

Pol Capt Samart Khlongdee, duty officer at Dom police station, said the crash occurred about 2.26pm at the intersection near Lantae village on Lantae - Chong Chom Road in tambon Thepraksa, which runs along Thai-Cambodian border. 

One of the two vehicles was an Isuzu pickup with 14 people on board.  Thanawut Makphol, 33, the driver, his wife and son were in the truck's front section, and 11 others were sitting in the back tray.

When the vehicles collided all of those sitting in the back were thrown out onto the road.  One of them, Nan Pasda, 79, Mr Thanawut's mother-in-law, was killed. The other people in the vehicle were injured.

The other vehicle was a Toyota Mighty X with three people on board. Jamras Maiwan, 35, the driver, sustained serious injuries. His wife, Janpen, and six-year-old son, Pratya, were killed.

Villagers said accidents occurred frequently at this intersection.
