The second of two prisoners who walked out of an unlocked police cell in Roi Et province was recaptured in the northeastern province on Saturday after six days on the run.

Surachai Phumipak, 24, was apprehended at a sugarcane plantation in Moeiwadi district on Saturday after police gave chase to a pickup truck that had been stolen earlier in the day from a rubber plantation in Na Mon district of neighbouring Kalasin province.

The pickup was later found abandoned in Kuchinarai district, adjacent to Moeiwadi district.

Surachai was one of two prisoners who walked out the cell at the Phon Thong district police station last Sunday after it was unlocked by a senior sergeant major.

The first jailbreaker, Surasak Kuntamat, 24, and two women who had been visiting the two men at the time of the escape, were arrested on Thursday in Na Mon district.

The two women had asked for permission to see the two prisoners at the police cell last Sunday. Security camera footage shows Pol Sen Sgt Maj Chalad Naen-udon unlocking the cell at 4.51am and then walking away. The two men and their visitors then fled the police station.

Pol Sen Sgt Maj Chalad was suspended from duty and is facing a disciplinary inquiry.
