Pongthep on Privy Council

Pongthep Nhuthep, a deputy permanent secretary for defence, has been appointed as a new privy councillor, according to an announcement published on the website of the Royal Gazette on Thursday.

His Majesty the King approved the appointment of Adm Pongthep, which took effect yesterday, the announcement said.

With Adm Pongthep's appointment, the Privy Council now consists of 15 members including Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda.

According to the constitution, the Privy Council may consist of up to 19 members including the Privy Council president.

Born on Aug 29, 1957 in Chon Buri, Adm Pongthep attended Sattahip School in his hometown before he enrolled at the Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School in the same Class 16 as army chief Gen Chalermchai Sittisart, air force chief ACM Jom Rungsawang, and defence permanent secretary Gen Chaichan Changmongkol.

He also enrolled at the Royal Thai Naval Academy (RTNA) in Class 73.

His previous positions include a stint as a naval attache to Rome.

In 2010 he served as director-general of the Naval Communications and Information Technology Department.

Before he became defence deputy permanent secretary last year, Adm Pongthep served as the chief of staff of the RTNA.
