Flooding continues to make life miserable for people in parts of 10 provinces, mostly in the Northeast, the disaster prevention and mitigation chief said on Wednesday.

Chatchai Phromlert said 251,873 families in 4,609 villages were affected and 14 people had died as a consequence of flooding in the past month.

Nine of the provinces still hit by flooding were in the Northeast  - Amnat Charoen, Kalasin, Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom, Nakhon Ratchasima, Roi Et, Sakon Nakhon, Ubon Ratchathani and Yasothon. The other province was Ayutthaya on the Central Plain, which was receiving water being rapidly discharged from the Chao Phraya dam in Chai Nat province.

In Sakon Nakhon, floods affected 135,044 families in 1,267 villages and nine people had died. Floodwater claimed three lives in Roi Et, where 13,515 families in 847 villages were affected. Two other people had died in Mukdahan, where 30,633 families were affected in 403 villages.

Mr Chatchai said heavy rain had fallen over the area from July 5 to Aug 2 and caused flooding in 7,713 villages of 44 provinces. The floods had already drained in 34 provinces.
