NAKHON RATCHASIMA: A man cycling on a main road died on Sunday after his bicycle was hit by a car driven by a German national.

Thavorn Singnoi, 55, died after the car - driven by a German man identified as Clos Rieger Marcel Maria, 53 - crashed into his bicycle on Mittraphap Road in Sikhiu district, said Theerapong Pinitmontree, a duty officer of Sikhiu police station.

The driver told police that he was going to pick up his girlfriend in Muang district at the time. He did not see Thavorn because it was dark and the bicycle had no lights, he said.

The body of the man was sent to Sikhiu Hospital and the driver was charged with careless driving leading to the death of other persons.

The accident occurred four days after a Filipino cyclist taking part in a long-distance event was killed when his bicycle was hit by a van that ran a red light in Chachoengsao province. The man sped away but was later arrested.
