Van crash toll rises to 12

The death toll from Sunday's passenger van crash in Sa Kaeo rose to 12 yesterday when another victim succumbed to injuries.

Sa Kaeo governor Wichit Chatphaisit said he was told at 1pm yesterday that one of four injured victims still in intensive care at Sa Kaeo Crown Prince Hospital had been pronounced dead.

The three remaining victims being treated at the hospital are all Lao nationals, two males and one female, said Mr Wichit.

Ten Lao migrant workers and their Thai driver were killed when the van crashed into a lorry in the early hours of Sunday near Wang Sombun hospital in Sa Keao's Wang Sombun district. Four others, one Thai and three Lao nationals, sustained severe injuries.

Mr Wichit dismissed as incorrect media reports that the van's GPS tracking system, which monitors speed, was switched off for the fateful trip.

A preliminary investigation found the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, said Mr Wichit, adding that he was only 22 years old, inexperienced and had not had enough sleep before the trip.

Lao relatives of the crash victims identified the bodies at Wang Sombun Hospital yesterday, said an informed source.
