Most people worried by high cost of living: Poll

A majority of people say they are concerned about the high prices of consumer goods and high cost of living, according to the result of a survey by Suan Dusit Rajabhat University, or Suan Dusit Poll.

The poll was conducted on Sept 3-7 on 1,172 people to guage how much they are concerned by the current political, economic and social conditions.

Regarding economic conditions, most of the respondents -- 62.39% -- said they are concerned about high goods prices and the high cost of living and suggested that government take measures to control goods prices; 35.05% said they are indebted and their incomes do not meet their expenses; 22.75% said the country's economy is in a recession and the government should take steps to build up foreign investor confidence and introduce new economic stimulus programmes; 16.15% said they are worried about unemployment and want the government to help by running job creation programmes; and 14.22% said prices of farm products are now very low and quick actions are needed to solve the problem.

On the political situation, 43.76% of the respondents said they are concerned about the government's handling of the country's administration and development; 38.83% said they are unhappy with conflicts among politicians and their conduct; 33.20% worry about corruption and want to see strict budget controls; 14.19% said a constitutional amendment, sought by many political parties, should adhere to transparent moral guidelines; and 12.27% said the government should quickly implement its policies to create political stability.

On social conditions, 54.81% said they worry about crime and violence; 29.25% are concerned by the morality and ethics of people in society; 23.31% are concerned about flooding and drought; 17.38% are concerned about youths taking drugs and indulging in vices including motorcycle racing; and 11.55% are concerned about misuse of social media.
