Dems tout 'potential' candidates

Former Bangkok governor Apirak Kosayodhin, and Muang Thai Insurance's chief executive and president Nualphan Lamsam have "good potential" to represent the Democrat Party in the race for Bangkok's governorship, said the party's deputy leader Ong-art Klampaibul on Sunday.

According to Interior Minister Gen Anupong Paojinda, local elections, including the election of the new Bangkok governor, are likely to be held early next year.

While the party still has plenty of time to decide on a candidate, Mr Ong-art said Mr Apirak has the support of many people within the party.

"Ms Nualphan is also a potential candidate, as she gets a lot of attention from the public any time the Bangkok governor election comes around," said Mr Ong-art.

Mr Ong-art said the party has no set preference on a candidate, but ideally the candidate is a "professional executive with a sound knowledge of the city's bureaucracy", who is ready to begin working right away after winning the elections.

Although Bangkok has changed dramatically since his first victory 15 years ago, Mr Apirak said he believed that Bangkok residents will continue to expect solutions to the city's traffic congestion and improve the city's environment and their quality of life.
