32m meth pills, 25 tonnes of hydrochloric acid seized in North

A total of 32.3 methamphetamine pills and 25 tonnes of hydrochloric acid, a precursor for producing the drugs, were seized by narcotics suppression authorities in the North from Aug 1 to Sept 20, authorities said.

Niyom Termsrisuk, secretary-general of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board, said the seizures were made in seven occasions, one in Chiang Rai province and six others in Chiang Mai.

Seized in the seven cases were 32,390,000 meth pills and 25.35 tons of hydrochloric acid, a precursor, sufficient for the production of up to 2.5 trillion meth pills.

The seizures were part of the ongoing operations to curb the trafficking of drugs across the border from the Golden Triangle into Thailand via the North.

Mr Niyom said narcotics and precursors have also been seized in five other countries -- Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam -- in the Mekong river basin under the Safe Mekong Drug Control Joint Operation Plan 2019-2022, an operation to destory both sources of drugs and storage areas.
