Ex-Pheu Thai MP Nawat transferred to Bang Kwang

Pheu Thai Party MP for Khon Kaen Nawat Tohcharoensuk has been transferred to Bang Kwang Prison in Bangkok from Khon Kaen, according to the Corrections Department.

Pol Col Naras Savestanan, the department's director-general, said on Friday Nawat's transfer is in line with security management concerning an inmate who was sentenced to death and whose bail request was rejected.

On Sept 24, the Khon Kaen provincial court sentenced Nawat, the Khon Kaen Constituency 7 MP, to death for masterminding the murder of an assistant chief of the Khon Kaen provincial administration organisation in 2013.

The victim, Suchart Khotethum, was shot dead in front of his home in Khon Kaen's Muang district on May 3, 2013, as he was about to leave for work.

Nawat surrendered to police on April 23 last year before being released on bail of 2 million baht.

The Constitutional Court ruled this week to suspend him from duty, pending a ruling sought from the Election Commission as to whether Nawat had lost his MP status after he was sentenced to death and jailed.
