The cabinet has approved a package of draft ministerial regulations necessary for enhancing cooperation in water resource management and better handling of flood and drought crises, according to the Office of National Water Resources (ONWR).

Somkiat Prajamwong, the ONWR's secretary-general, said several of the 11 draft regulations deal with the selection of river basin committee members and setting up of water user organisations and their roles and responsibilities.

The others involve rules and guidelines for compensation payments to people affected by state measures to tackle floods and water shortages, said Mr Somkiat.

According to the ONWR secretary-general, these draft regulations are in line with the 2018 Water Resources Act and they will be forwarded to the Council for State for review before being published in the Royal Gazette.

Once the regulations take effect, the ONWR will proceed with the selection of river basin committee members, he said.

Mr Somkiat added that the regulations will also help to involve the civil sector in water resource management, enhance cooperation across government agencies and help authorities better manage floods and/or droughts.
