The home of late Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda will be returned via the army to the Royal Household Bureau on Thursday.

A team of caretakers showed reporters around the Si Sao Thewes residence on Tuesday, and said that all his personal belongings have been sent to Ban Sattha in Gen Prem's home province of Songkhla.

The Buddhist chanting held as part of the funeral rites for Gen Prem were completed on Oct 18. The date for the royally sponsored cremation is yet to be set.

Following the cremation, a portion of Gen Prem's ashes will be sent to his birthplace in Songkhla, while some will also go to Prince of Songkla University, according to a source who was a close aide of the late statesman.

The source said Gen Prem had spent 40 years at the Si Sao Thewes residence, beginning with his tenure as army chief, then as prime minister, and finally as head of the Privy Council until he passed away on May 26.

Once a seat of power, the Si Sao Thewes residence was open to government leaders, politicians and military top brass who came seeking advice from Gen Prem in times of political crisis.

Long after his retirement from the political scene, Gen Prem kept an open door to government and military leaders, who turned up to extend their best wishes on special occasions such as New Year, Songkran and his birthday.

The side gate of the house is also famous as the exit used by Gen Prem to escape arrest when a group of officers launched a coup against his government on April 1, 1981 -- April Fool's Day. The coup attempt failed and those involved later surrendered.

Gen Prem read the Bangkok Post every morning before eating his breakfast of steamed egg and coffee, scrupulously avoiding fried food, the source added.

During the coronation on May 6, despite his age Gen Prem refused the chair offered and stood with other dignitaries awaiting the arrival of His Majesty the King.

The coronation was the great statesman's final official duty; he passed away 20 days later, the source said.

Gen Prem died of heart failure at Phramongkutklao Hospital on May 26 at the age of 98.
