Cops seek motive in freezer murder case

A 20-year-old man who murdered his own mother before mutilating and stuffing her remains into a freezer in Bangkok's Bang Khunthian district on Sunday has died.

Sira Somdej died yesterday from injuries sustained from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, after a neighbour came to his house and discovered that he had killed and chopped up his mother, said Pol Maj Gen Chokchai Ngamwong, commander of the Bangkok Metropolitan Division 9 Police.

Pol Maj Gen Chokchai said that officers are currently combing through the scene of the crime to look for evidence which may help investigators figure out Sira's motives.

A preliminary investigation indicated that Sira may have suffered from severe mental problems, and neighbours said he often quarrelled with his mother, according to deputy police spokesperson, Pol Col Kritsana Pattanacharoen.

Pol Col Kritsana said that officers from Tha Kham police station are examining CCTV footage and questioning witnesses to get a bigger picture of what happened.

The gruesome murder-suicide happened on Sunday in a house Soi Tha Kam 28 in Samae Dam, Bang Khunthian district.

Woranuch Wongchai sought help from the police after she went looking for Yuree Somdej at her house, only to find her son who refused to tell her where his mother was.

Ms Woranuch told police that she entered the house to look for Yuree, only to find her body parts stuffed in a freezer.

When Sira discovered that she had found Yuree's remains, he shot himself in the right temple.

The distraught Ms Woranuch went to a nearby police station to seek help, and emergency services managed to get Sira to a nearby hospital to be treated for his injuries. However, Sira ultimately succumbed to his injuries, Pol Maj Gen Chokchai said.
