Chinese to join rescue drills

In an effort to boost confidence among Chinese tourists, Phuket authorities will conduct a full-scale emergency drill next Thursday, Phuket governor Phakaphong Tavipatana said yesterday.

The drill will be held at Ao Chalong pier in Muang district and overseen by the Ministry of Interior, represented by Deputy Interior Minister Niphon Bunyamanee.

Mr Phakaphong said Phuket was collaborating with the Thai-Chinese Cultural & Relationship Council to boost safety for tourists with special measures over the Chinese New Year festival from Jan 21 to Feb 2. Next Thursday's drill will cover maritime rescue, he said.

China's Peaceland Foundation will send 12 staff to take part in the drill and review existing maritime safety measures.

"The participation of the Chinese rescue team will benefit Phuket by boosting confidence among Chinese tourists," said Mr Phakaphong. The move comes after Phuket visitor numbers plunged by 20% following a July 2018 boat accident that left almost 50 Chinese dead.

The Chinese rescuers will also join Thai counterparts in safety monitoring at six spots in Phuket -- Ao Chalong pier, Jian Vanich pier, Coral (Hey) Island, and Patong, Kata and Karon beaches.
