PHUKET: An American man was found exhausted eight hours after becoming lost in a forest at Nai Thon beach in Thalang district.

The man called the tourist police hotline 1155 for help about 3pm on Monday and sent his location via his mobile phone. Local fishermen told police the spot was about 1.5km from Nai Thon beach.

Police coordinated a search with the help of Sirinart National Park officials  and local residents. Two teams were dispatched.

One of the teams found the missing tourist, who appeared exhausted after being lost in the area with no drinkling water for more than eight hours.    

Medics gave him first aid. The tourist did not want to go a hospital.

Police identified the man as David Raymond Mitchell, 48. He was staying at a hotel on Patong beach and went to Nai Thon beach by airport bus. He took a stroll along the beach and became lost.

Mr Mitchell thanked police and everyone else involved in the search.
