Army welfare head awaits test results

Maj Gen Rachit Arunwong, chief of the army's welfare department, is waiting for the result of a Covid-19 test after attending a boxing match at Lumpinee Boxing Stadium, deputy army spokeswoman Col Sirichan Ngathong said.

Col Sirichan yesterday said Maj Gen Rachit was tested for the virus at Phra Mongkutklao Hospital after attending the boxing event on Ramintra Road on March 6.

Members of his family have also been isolated for 14-day quarantine, Col Sirichan said yesterday.

Maj Gen Rachit reportedly attended the boxing match in which actor and singer Matthew Deane Chanthavanij was the emcee.

The actor later revealed he tested positive for the virus. The match drew an audience of more than 10,000.

Army spokesman Col Winthai Suvaree denied talk that Maj Gen Rachit had just returned from France and contracted the virus from there.

Meanwhile, army chief Gen Apirat Kongsomgpong yesterday called a meeting of army agencies to discuss measures to prevent the spread of the virus among army personnel.

The army's chemical department will today disinfect buildings and meeting rooms at the army's headquarters.

Also, Gen Pornpipat Benyasri, chief of Defence Forces, has instructed agencies under the Royal Thai Armed Forces headquarters to step up measures to control the spread of Covid-19, spokeswoman Col Chatrapee Poonsawat said.

The measures include military staff and their family members avoiding travelling abroad, and staying away from crowded places or activities involving large gatherings of people. If they come into contact with at-risk groups of people, they must follow disease control procedures stipulated by the Public Health Ministry to prevent possible transmission to others, Col Chatrapee said.
