Princess Ubolratana has expressed her concern about a possible surge in new coronavirus cases following the lifting of the ban on sales of alcoholic beverages in most provinces.

"No social distancing whatsover!!!!" the princess wrote on her nichax Instagram account on Monday, after seeing video of people scrambling to buy beer and spirits.

The princess questioned the decision to lift the ban, saying it could lead to an increase in new cases due to social gatherings that would follow.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration ended the ban from Sunday after prohibiting sales of alcoholic beverages for almost a month, to discourage people from gathering in groups to drink during Songkran and on other occasions.

Only takeaway sales are approved. Drinking is not permitted in restaurants, pubs and other public places.

"Who drinks alone unless they are an alcoholic or heartbroken?" she said.
