Thais told to keep up virus guard

Thais are being warned to keep their guard up after the latest confirmed Covid-19 patients were found to have visited hospitals, a hairdresser and a shopping centre.

Thailand yesterday reported three new coronavirus infections, bringing the number of total cases to 3,037. No additional deaths were recorded, leaving the death toll at 56.

The newly recorded patients were identified as a Thai man, German expatriate and a Thai woman who recently returned from the Philippines, according to Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration.

He said the Thai man was 72 and had diabetes and lung cancer, adding the patient visited a public hospital four days ago and then a hairdresser.

Dr Taweesilp said the German patient was identified as a 42-year-old who did not show any Covid-19 symptoms.

He said the patient lives in Bangkok but he and his Thai wife visited relatives in Chaiyaphum between April 30-May 16.

On May 8, a relative in Chaiyaphum developed a fever but did not ask to be tested for Covid-19, Dr Taweesilp said, adding the German man then visited a shopping centre in the province before resuming work in Bangkok on Monday.

As for the Thai woman who returned from the Philippines, she tested positive in the kingdom, he said. Dr Taweesilp said she was 25 and had been in the island nation for a language course. He said she left the Philippines on May 13.

He said she tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday, becoming the first patient among returnees from the Philippines.

"Thailand has passed through its first Covid-19 wave," he said.
