NAKHON RATCHASIMA: About 100 people gathered in protest on Monday against a plan to build a garbage-fuelled power plant near their community in Khong district.

Villagers holding placards with messages opposing the planned power plant met at Wat Ban Muang  Khong in tambon Khu Khat in the morning, before marching to rally in front of the office of the Khu Khat tambon administration organisation (TAO).

At the TAO office, a meeting was in progress to consider steps to be taken to seek official permission for the construction of the power plant - a project to be jointly built and operated by a private company and the TAO.

The villagers submitted a protest letter and a list of people opposing the project to a representative of the chairman of the TAO.

They said that if the plant was built, there would be a dump for garbage brought from 19 nearby districts, just one kilometre from their community. The dump site was near a source of raw water for the production of tap  water.

The residents said if the TAO insisted on going ahead with the project, they would file a protest petition with the provincial office and the prime minister's office.
