Man nabbed after putting cats in fridge

KRABI: Police arrested a Chinese man for allegedly torturing stray cats on Phi Phi island.

Pol Lt Col Thongchai Matitham, deputy police superintendent of Phi Phi, on Sunday said Shi Hang, 30, was arrested at a hotel in tambon Ao Nang of Muang district on Friday.

The arrest came after Watchdog Thailand, a non-profit animal welfare group, filed a complaint against Mr Shi.

Police said Mr Shi had stayed in three hotels since arriving on the island on Oct 5.

A cleaner at one of the hotels found blood stains, cat fur, and live cats in the fridge in his room. It is unclear how long they'd been there.

Hotel staff reported the incident to the welfare group.

After his arrest, police checked his mobile phone and found photos and video clips featuring the torture of cats.

Mr Shi insisted he was a cat lover.
