Service a boon for elderly

The Department of Health said it had met its goal in providing its Long Term Care (LTC) service to help boost the well-being of more than 200,000 elderly people.

The department's acting director-general, Suwannachai Wattanayingcharoenchai, yesterday said the programme is operating in 6,722 tambons, or 92% of 7,255 tambons nationwide.

He said 218,093, or 88.7%, out of 245,907 dependent elderly have been taken care of under the programme.

The number of dependent elderly who have access to the service has increased by 22% and 1.4% of the bed-ridden elderly were now up and about, he said.

The department provided a training course for personnel taking care of elderly people.

He said 13,615 people had become care managers, and 86,404 became care givers.
