Children's respiratory disease warning

KHON KAEN: A doctor has voiced concern over an outbreak of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which causes respiratory tract infections in young children up to two years old.

Dr Kanokwan Sriraksa, chief of the paediatrics section at Khon Kaen Hospital, said five children infected with RSV had been admitted to the intensive care unit for children.

She said RSV was a flu-like virus that caused respiratory tract infections and children with it needed immediate ICU care.

The doctor said parents should closely watch their children, since the weather was so changeable.

Anyone displaying symptoms of coughing, wheezing, high fever and loss of appetite should be taken to a doctor as soon as possible, the doctor said, adding that parents and their children could protect themselves from the virus by wearing face masks, washing their hands frequently, and social distancing.
