SONGKHLA: A Myanmar migrant worker was killed by a fellow countryman at a workers' camp in Hat Yai district on Sunday morning, police said.

Pol Capt Prinya Piyayat, a Hat Yai police duty officer, said a team of police officers went to a vegetable oil factory in the Muang Kho Hong Municipality to investigate after being alerted to the incident.

In a room at a workers' camp near the factory, a Myanmar man, Aung Soe Lwin, 37, was found dead, lying face down with a fractured skull. He had been hit in the head with a crowbar, which was left in the room.

An investigation revealed that he had been bludgeoned to death by a Myanmar friend, Kyaw San Maung, 42, who surrendered to the police. The two were from the same hometown in Myanmar. They travelled to Thailand together and had worked at the same factory for about six years.

Police said Maung them he and Lwin drank together throughout the night. After getting drunk, they had a quarrel. Lwin hit him in the face and squeezed his neck before leaving the room.

Maung said he remained outside for a while. While on his way back to his own room, he looked into Lwin's room and saw him asleep. Still angry, he picked up the crowbar and hit Lwin three times in the head.

He said was about to go to the police station to surrender when the police arrived.

He was charged with murder.
