KANCHANABURI: A six-year-old girl has become the latest Covid-19 patient in this western border province, the 5th since the new wave of the outbreak began, the provincial Covid-19 response centre announced on Sunday.

Athisan Intra, director of the centre, said the girl's parents on Jan 4 tested positive for the virus at Maka Rak Hospital after returning from a gambling den in Pin Klao area in Bangkok. The family is from tambon Don Cha-em in Tha Maka district

Fourteen people who had close contact with the couple, the 3rd and 4th infections, were taken for testing.

Thirteen of them were negative, but one --- the six-year-old girl, was diagnosed with Covid-19.

During Dec 31-Jan 2, the girl accompanied her parents on a trip to Chom Bung district, Ratchaburi province, for the New Year.

They returned to Kanchanaburi on Jan 3.

On Jan 5, the girl was tested for the novel coronavirus at Maka Rak Hospital in Tha Maka district. She was confirmed to have contracted the virus on Jan 9.

Four people who had close contact with the girl and were considered at-risk had been isolated and tested. Results were expected soon, Mr Athisan said.

All five Covid-19 patients in the province were being treated at Maka Rak Hospital, he added.
