'Forgotten Girls' in Ethiopia?

A Facebook page called "ThailandsForgottenGirls" is claiming that six Thai women were arrested at Bole International Airport in Ethiopia after they were tricked into smuggling drugs.

The case has not been verified by the Thai Foreign Affairs Ministry. The page was created on Jan 4.

However, a message posted on the Facebook page said the six were tricked by "two very pretty, well dressed and fun loving" Thai women in Bangkok before the six flew to Ethiopia's capital of Addis Ababa on Nov 17.

The post said the six women were left alone in a room without food and water for four days before they were taken out to go sightseeing by their captors.

It claimed that the six were arrested in Ethiopia by the authorities because "the luggage of all six girls had been professionally packed and the linings were filled with cocaine" at the airport.

The six women were assisted by a lawyer hired by one of the captive's husband back in Koh Phangan, the post said. The post asks for the donation of legal assistance, food, female hygiene products and money through a crowdfunding website called gogetfunding.

The post contains a list of the name of each woman and images of hand-written letters in Thai and English by one of the captives.

An image of a man allegedly involved was also attached.

Ministry spokesman Tanee Sangrat said officials are currently investigating the case and verifying the information.
