AYUTTHAYA: Detection of another Covid-19 infection has raised the total in the province to 40, provincial public health chief Peera Areerat announced on Wednesday.

The new patient is a 67-year-old man, the husband of the 39th case. The couple live in a  house in Moo 11 village in tambon Bang Len, Bang Pa-in district.

The man works in a factory and his wife sells curry in the street outside it. The man caught the virus from his wife, Dr Peera said.

Health officials were out actively testing almost 900 people deemed at risk of infection. The results were expected soon, he said.

Governor Panu Yaemsri said 32 of the province's 40 Covid-19 patients had already recovered,  with eight under treatment.

Asked about a petition by operators of traditional massage outlets  for a relaxation of the provincial order closing their businesses, which were deemed at high risk of spreading Covid-19, Mr Panu said it had been considered at a meeting.

It was agreed that parlour owners, masseurs and masseuses would first be invited to attend training in health safety. When the government decides to ease restrictions, traditional massage parlours whose operators had taken the training would be allowed to reopen, the governor said.
