Singer in hot water over Tang Chao claims

The Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD) has summoned folk singer Yingyong Yodbuangam after he was suspected of exaggerating the effects of his caterpillar fungus food supplement.

Pol Col Neti Wongkularb, superintendent of the CPPD's division 4, told the media that Prayong Buangam, commonly known as Yingyong Yodbuangam, would be summoned to hear charges against him.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and police with the CPPD recently began cracking down on false advertising in the food supplement industry.

The TV host is also being questioned by authorities after he was accused of exaggerating the benefits of his product in online advertisements. The food supplement business is highly lucrative.

Mr Yingyong is suspected of exaggerating the quality of his Tang Chao, or caterpillar fungus, product.

He would be charged with exaggerating the quality of products.

Under the Food and Drugs Act of 1979 he could be jailed up to three years and/or be fined for up to 30,000 baht if found guilty.

He would also be charged with advertising products without permission, liable for a 5,000 baht fine if found guilty.

Pol Col Neti said police are reviewing advertising content, including speech and video clips, to determine if they've violated the FDA law on false advertising.

Pattra Boonserm, deputy secretary-general of the FDA, said the authority has labelled caterpillar fungus products as ingredients in traditional medicine and food supplements, not as pharmaceutical drugs.
